On recent travels around our building I was excited to see so many students and teachers working and learning together in small groups. Our teachers value instructional time with small groups to assess student learning and provide direct instruction. Even when space is tight, they find nooks and crannies to allow students the opportunity to explore the curriculum in fun and meaningful ways. Mrs. Hunter took to the hallway for a guided reading activity with some of her kindergarteners while other students in her class worked together on a “Think it Through” activity. Third grade students in Mrs. Brill’s class worked on an activity called “Cover Up.” Children rolled dice, multiplied the numbers and then created an array on their grid using colored tiles. The first player to completely cover their board won! Challenging, yet fun. Just what school is all about.
