Veggies? We Love Them!

On Friday, our SCA students were surrounded by cameras and microphones as they taste tested new foods that the Office of Food & Nutrition services is considering adding to their lunch menu.  The twist of this “taste party” was that every item included hidden veggies!

Our student leaders tried:

-Broccoli & cheddar soup (made with broccoli, white beans, butternut squash and sweet potato)

-Healthy Joe with turkey (made with tomatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potato and green bell peppers)

-Whole wheat penne pasta with marinara sauce (sauce is made with tomatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, carrots and sweet potato)

-Veggie Pizza: with green peppers and mushrooms

-Corn chips & cheese sauce (made with white beans, butternut squash, sweet potato, and American cheese)

OES taste experts rated each item as good, fair, or poor and offered specific comments, such as “Amazing flavor!”  or “Sort of bland.”  The students enjoyed most of the foods and were surprised to find out the variety of veggies that were used to make the entrees; however, not everyone was a fan 🙂

Since this past week was National School Lunch Week, local and national media outlets were very interested in learning about the changes FCPS is looking at bringing to our students and to see if kids would actually eat them.  Channel 4, 7, 9 , NBC and NPR all produced a piece on our efforts – hopefully you caught us on the news! -cg
