Soggy But Happy Start

We sure have had a soggy start to the new school year!  But as I write this, the sun is out and I see blue sky – thank goodness!  We were thrilled to welcome the children back to school on Tuesday; it was wonderful to see their smiling faces and to hear their exciting stories from the summer.  It was especially fun to see the surprised look on their faces as they spotted new sections of our building.  The bright tiles, colorful rugs, and updated technology in our new classrooms give us all a glimpse of what will be the norm at Oakton in another year.  Students spent the week getting to know each other, building learning communities in their classrooms, navigating the cafeteria, making new friends, and discovering new routes around the Oakton campus.

Learning is our fundamental purpose and we started on Day 1!  We have incorporated ZOOM time into our schedule again this year.  ZOOM is a 30 minute block every Tuesday – Friday.  During ZOOM time, students have the opportunity for enrichment activities or re-teaching and small group assistance.  By creating this block, we are able to better meet the learning needs of our students.  Each grade level team is working on designing how to best use ZOOM time to ensure that all of our Oakton students are challenged to meet their highest level of academic growth.  You will surely hear more about ZOOM during our Back to School presentations.

Speaking of Back To School Nights, they are next week!  The Kindergarten – 1st Grade BTSN will be held on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:00 pm.  Grades 2 – 3 will meet on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 pm, and grades 4-6 will meet on Thursday, September 15th at 7:00 pm.  A PTA meeting will precede all BTSNs at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria.  We will be offering 2 sessions each night for parents who need to attend different grade level presentations.  The 2nd session will be held at 7:50 pm.  Back to School Night provides parents with the opportunity to learn about the grade level curriculum, expectations, procedures, and routines.  We ask that you not bring your child to this event so that you can spend time with the teacher.

We are looking forward to seeing you all next week. It’s going to be a great year! -cg
