Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream…we all do.  For anyone who is dreaming of a school building that is designed for 21st centurylearners we are on our way.  As the staff and students took today off, the construction crews took advantage of the empty building.  New concrete block walls were built to accomodate new electrical rooms, shelves were installed in the gym to help with our shortage of storage space, and the space that used to house 2 SACC classrooms was demolished.  It was an amazing site.  I’ve attached some photos below.

The dirty demolition will soon be giving way to  the construction of the new office, media center (aka library), and several classrooms.  This first phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year.

Happy New Year!  While we were at home relaxing and celebrating the holiday season, and ringing in the new year,  the construction at Oakton has really begun!  When staff and students return to school on Monday there will be some very visable changes.

The most prominent change will be chain link fencing that now separates the construction areas from the students.  It’s not pretty, but it is very important.  With the fencing also comes some new pedestrian taffic patterns, too.  Door 3, formally known as the SACC doors, will no longer be available for use.

All of the ceiling tiles and grids have been removed from all hallways which makes for some interesting conversation as children and adults travel through the halls.

The last change, and hardest for me to watch go, were the trees.  The old oak and pine trees near door 3 were removed to make way for the new addition.  The trees on the back field were removed to make way for the new underground water retention pond.  The good news is that all of the trees that were removed will be replaced with younger ones and more of them!

There is one more change that students won’t be able to see, but I snapped some pictures because I thought it was cool.    There were four classrooms that used to be for our first grade…now they are one.  Look carefully at the windows and see if you can find the American flag that is still being displayed.

We have been anxiously awaiting the start of our renovation and are pleased to announce that it will be getting into full gear starting on Monday.  All of the permits have been obtained, drawings are done, and now the earth will begin to move.  Office trailers for the contractor (Henley Construction) have arrived and the p0rt-a-jon’s are in place.

We will be updating the progress of the renovation weekly on this blog.

The first visible changes will happen inside the building starting after school on Monday, December 20.  All of the ceiling tiles and grids in the corridors will be removed throughout the week after the kids leave.   Over the break, environmental control fencing as well as safety fencing will begin to begin to be installed.  Below are some pictures of what the changes will look like.

We”ll be updating this site weekly and we appreciate your patience and support as we go through this awesome endeavor.
