Thunder is our friend…

NBC 4’s meteorologist, Tom Kierein, visited with Oakton’s 2nd graders on Thursday.  He talked about his profession and what first interested him in becoming a meteorologist – SNOW!  He impressed upon the children that thunder warns us about an incoming storm – thus, “thunder is our friend” since it notifies us to take cover.  Our inquisitive students had lots of questions for him – “Where is the worst weather?”  “Can we have a tornado and a hurricane at the same time?”  and “What do you do when you are on T.V. and you have to use the bathroom?!”  All very important questions 🙂  OES student’s impressed Mr. Kierein with their knowledge of weather patterns, forecasting, and television.  In fact, he promised  to give our students a shout out on Tuesday morning’s broadcast (2/25 at 5:51AM & 11:15AM).  Make sure to tune in!

100th Day of School!

Our kindergarten and first grade students celebrated the 100th day of school on Friday.  They practiced all the ways they could count to 100, sing to 100, group 100 items, glue 100 items…you get the idea!  -cg

5th Grade Historical Tea

OES 5th graders brought history alive this week!

Students selected a historical or famous figure to research. Then, each student wrote a creative narrative from the perspective of their chosen character.  On Tuesday, students dressed up as their historical figure, presented to their class in character, worked collaboratively in small groups to create a timeline of the major events from the lives of all the historical figures presented, and played Bingo to review the facts about each of the figures.  The event culiminated in the cafeteria, where all the historical figures met for “tea” and to mix and mingle.  It was THE place to be! -cg

Welcome Back!

It has been so wonderful to have the children back after all that snow!  Things are beginning to feel normal again.  We kicked off the short week with a great Band & Strings Concert on Wednesday.  Our strings students played pieces such as Seminole Chant, Spy Guy, and Nutcracker March.  Our band students wowed us with Twinkling Stars, Handel’s Fanfare and Minuet,  and the Attack of the Cyclops.  Thank you to Mrs. JoAnn Azzarello (band) and Ms. Allison Devereaux (strings) for all their work with our students!

Thursday marked the Chinese New Year – The Year of the Rabbit.  Mrs. Enoch’s 1st graders celebrated by parading through the OES hallways with their dragon!  They chanted “Gung Hay Fat Choy” to onlookers on their route.

Lastly, Ms. Robinson’s 3rd graders designed Greek column structures using using everything from legos to marshmellows!  Take a look…

It’s been a great week!  -cg
